OBJETIVO(S)

The primary goal of the project is to assess the techno-economic potential of sustainable torrefied bamboo pellets import from specifically Colombia to the Netherlands and from export countries to Europe in general. . Further objectives include: 1. Assessment of the sustainability of bamboo as a biomass supply chain based on the Testing Framework for sustainable biomass. The sustainability is evaluated by specifically monitoring the effects of bamboo residues collection in Colombia, processing into pellets via torrefaction, transportation from Colombia to the Netherlands and final application as bioenergy source in the Netherlands. 2. Tackle technical aspects using this biomass fuel in the Dutch power industry through extensive and conclusive experimental work, including specific conversion and combustion tests to provide relevant information for calculating the overall potential GHG reductions of the complete biomass chain. 3. Generation of innovative alternatives for the import of sustainable second generation biomass pellets from Colombia to the Netherlands. 4. Support local initiatives (research, monitoring, market opportunities, and sustainability policies development) for livehood improvement and biodiversity conservation in Colombia. 5. Inform relevant stakeholder on the outcome of the sustainability and the possible value chain of sustainable second generation pellets.

RESUMEN

In order to maximize the biomass share the Dutch energy sector and to simplify biomass import, biomass upgrading, pre-treatment and feeding technologies will be optimized, with torrefaction already in the stage of demonstration. The selection of bamboo is a long term vision for innovation and technology development for the sustainable biomass import to The Netherlands The primary goal of the project is to assess the techno-economic potential of sustainable torrefied bamboo pellets import from specifically Colombia to the Netherlands and from export countries to Europe in general. The generated knowledge and monitoring capacity will contribute to counteract the undesired effects of biomass production for energy purposes and to promote sustainable development. This report presents the results of the technical, economic and sustainability assessment of the import of torrefied bamboo pellets from Colombia to the Netherlands as a biomass supply chain for electricity production. The base case assessment considers the bamboo species Guadua angustifolia. Additionally to guadua, alternative species have been identified and subjected to a preliminary technical assessment. Up to date, there are no studies on the use of the bamboo species Guadua angustifolia in the heat and power sector.
